A large portion of John Morris’ film scores were written through his collaborations with writer/producer/director Mel Brooks. Arguably, two of the most important collaborations between Morris and Brooks, Young Frankenstein (1974) and The Elephant Man (1980), are films that could not be more different in tone and subject matter, yet a striking versatility becomes apparent. In the former, Morris sincerely embraces the sound world of classic horror; in the latter, he crafts one of the most moving, restrained, and human film scores of its time, giving tragic dignity to the story of Joseph Merrick. These two films alone illustrate not just Morris’s technical fluency with scoring film, but also his ability to interpret and enhance the narrative in ways both unexpected and unforgettable. Anyone who carefully listens to Young Frankenstein or The Elephant Man cannot fail to hear a composer of remarkable sensitivity and adaptability, which is why they were chosen to be published together in this edition.
The Elephant Man is engraved from the original orchestrations by Jack Hayes.
Young Frankenstein is engraved from the orignal orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick and Greig McRitchie.
Includes a forward by Mel Brooks!
